About this tile adhesive calculator
This tile adhesive calculator estimates how much tile adhesive you need and how many 25 kg bags to buy. Enter the area to be tiled and the trowel notch size; the tool works out the adhesive bed volume and converts it to kilograms. Bigger trowel notches lay a thicker bed, so they use more adhesive per square metre.
It covers wall and floor tiling with cement-based adhesives. Use a larger notch for big-format tiles and uneven backgrounds, and a smaller notch for small, flat tiles.
🧮 Exemple de Calcul
For 20 m² tiled with a 10 mm notched trowel:
- Consumption ≈ 4.5 kg/m² (10 mm notch, default fill factor)
- Adhesive = 20 × 4.5 = 90 kg
- Bags = 90 ÷ 25 = 4 × 25 kg bags
Back-buttering large tiles increases coverage, so allow a little extra adhesive.
💡 Practical tips
- Match the notch size to the tile: 6 mm for small tiles, 10–12 mm for large-format.
- Only spread as much adhesive as you can tile before it skins over.
- Back-butter large or heavy tiles to achieve full coverage and avoid voids.
- Use a flexible or rapid-set adhesive for floors, underfloor heating and wet areas.
❓ Questions Fréquentes
It depends on the trowel notch: roughly 2.7 kg/m² with a 6 mm notch up to about 5.4 kg/m² with a 12 mm notch. Uneven walls and back-buttering increase this.
Use a 6 mm notch for small wall tiles, 8–10 mm for standard tiles, and 10–12 mm for large-format or floor tiles where a thicker bed is needed.
A 25 kg bag covers roughly 5 m² with a 10 mm notch (about 4.5 kg/m²). Larger notches cover less area per bag.
